An Analysis of Participation Structure in Conversation Based on Interaction Corpus of Ubiquitous Sensor Data

چکیده
We propose the application of ubiquitous sensor technology to analyze dynamic structure transitions and the exchange of non-verbal information in multi-party human-to-human conversational interactions in open situations. We present an analysis of conversational interactions that took place in an open interaction space of poster presentation sessions and were collected as an Interaction Corpus. Based on a model of conversational participation structure, we hypothesized that the audience diversity in conversations can be understood by observing the role of each person standing in front of a poster and an exhibitor. We argue that the conversational interactions observed in the Interaction Corpus can effectively be captured by the differences in the patterns of transition of the roles each participant plays in the conversational participation structure.

This study aims at empirically furthering awareness of the organization of interaction in EFL classes. Informed by the methodological framework of conversation analysis, it draws upon a corpus of 52 three-hour naturally-occurring classroom interaction to identify classroom interactional contexts based on the structuring of the pedagogic goals in turn-taking sequences. Conversation analytic proc...
متن کاملVague Language and Interpersonal Communication: An Analysis of Adolescent Intercultural Conversation
This paper is concerned with the analysis of the spoken language of teenagers, taken from a newly developed specialised corpus the British and Taiwanese Teenage Intercultural Communication Corpus (BATTICC). متن کاملOrganizational Patterns of English Language Teachers’ Repair Practices
Despite the abundance of research on teachers’ repair practices in language classroom interaction, there are not enough conversation analytic studies on repair organization with the focus on the details of interaction in the context of EFL. Drawing on sociocultural and situated learning theories, this study explores the contingent nature of English language teachers’ org...
متن کاملTeacher Wait-Time and Learner Initiation: A Single Case Analysis
The prevailing pattern of classroom interaction is a tripartite exchange structure known as IRF (teacher initiation, student response, teacher follow-up/feedback; Sinclair & Coulthard, 1975). Although it has its own contributions to classroom discourse, it has been criticized on several grounds, particularly for affording minimum learner participation opportunities (Kasper, 2001). An alternativ...
